emissions system honking at idle 700 1987

periodically when my 87 760 turbo is idling it makes a kind of honking noise. it appears that the noise is air venting out of a vent hose from the emissions system along the left fender. Neither Haynes nor Chilton appear to have much info on emissions systems--- I guess because so many variations. this car was sold new in Colorado so I don't know if it has California emissions equipment or not. I can identify the charcoal canister but don't know about the peripheral gadgets. Is there a buildup of soot or something that I can clean? Thanks very much---this forum is very helpful.
