Big Big Scare!!! and question... 200

I have a '91 240 Automatic Wagon. On the way to work today, my heat was kicking, I turned off the heated seat switch and then went for the vent control. I was going almost 70mph and my hand hit the gear shift knob and knocked it into reverse because for some stupid convoluted reason you do NOT have to press the button on the top of the knob to shift gears even without brake pedal engaged - every light on the dashboard came. I immediately shifted into nuetral and pulled off the road and turned the car off. I waited a few minutes, turned the car back on, shifted into reverse and it seemed to work fine, shifted to drive and it seems to work fine. What should I check and what should I do? And why on earth would you not have to depress that button at least when not holding your foot on the brake?

Thank you.

Drew
