86 Volvo Wagon (this is a good question) 1986

Hi there, i just bought a nonrunning volvo.. it is a 86 with 130k... i went to start the car and the car turned over for approx 3 seconds (didnt start but wanted to), then started a clicking (like battery dying) and then just instrument panel lights (no noise).. i thought battery was dead.. installed brand new.. nothing.. i let the car sit overnight (its 10 degrees here).. next morning ... turned over approx 3 seconds, clicking, then nada... i am wondering if this could be a starter problem... am i on the right track... could a starter overheat with so little usage.. i am told car sat for 1yr... also i thought maybe a pulley was frozen so i removed the belts.. same thing..
