You don't need a spring compressor or anything to jack up anything to do ball joints. Just be careful of the 12mm bolts that go into the bottom of the strut. Apply plenty of PB Blaster ahead of time. I broke two and ended up replacing a strut on my 86 (replacing the original ball joints, at 206K last year!) I could have drilled them out, but the angle from under the car is miserable, it requires taking the brake backing plate off, and I had a parts car handy. Anyway the ball joint simply involves 3 19mm (3/4) nuts on the lower control arm, and the 4 12mm bolts into the bottom of the strut. Your lug wrench (better yet, impact gun) is perfect for getting the bottom balljoint nuts off. A pry bar is all that's needed to push things apart a little bit. You shouldn't need an alignment after replacing a ball joint, but you will when you do the tie rod ends. Did you get parts from FCP Groton? They're only 45 minutes or so from Middletown.
Good luck! Let me know if you need anything.
