Thanks everyone - I have sorted it now. There is a mushroom-headed bolt which has to be levered outwards with a long screwdriver, so that the thinner shank can lift up the slotted housing.
Do not swing the seat too far out of straight once you have got the first pivot out, because that tightens the bolt on the other side so that it won't pull out far enough.
