'87 240 stalled, started, stalled...won't run. 200

Just wondering if anyone knew what this could be. The other day my car stalled as if it had run out of gas...entirely possible as the gas gauge has been broken for some time. Filled up and still had trouble starting. With help of some "quick start" got it running...and all seemed well for 20km or so...then it stalled again. Left it over night and found it started easily in the morning...but stalled again after a couple of KM's! Now nothing seems to get it going. There is spark and no strange noises...but the coolant does seem low. The manuel suggests a number of possibilities but I was wondering if anyone has had similar problems and could share some info.
