Hey ya'll, she's back and she's whining. When I turn my ignition on (w\o cranking,) I don't hear any fuel pumps start (normal, right?) But after I crank it I am able to hear a slight hum (some would call it a whine... :) It's not terribly loud, certainly can't hear it when in the body of the car/when driving, but you can hear it when standing beside the car. Can anybody describe what is too loud, or what I should be listening for. I had a scare when I thought my fuel pump was failing the other day (cold weather, 146k on it). Surging, losing about 250rpm in 3rd, 4th & overdrive. When I investigated, it turned out that my intake manifold gasket was on it's last legs and spraying carb cleaner around it got rid of my loping and made her all good again. I've bought time with that (gasket sealant around the edge and tightened the nuts down as much as possible), but what I'm wondering is if it could have been a compound problem with both the gasket and a weak fuel pump. Furthermore, there is a bunch of cable housing/harnesing that runs up against the firewall and around the intake manifold. I have been warned that the insulation in this wiring harness is fagile and that when I go to actually replace the gasket, I stand the chance of damaging the wiring irreperably. It is a $500 piece of cable/housing, so this is not really feasible right now if I screw it up. Anythoughts? RE: Fuel pump, gasket, anything.
I think this car is trying to drive me mad. It's succeeding. Pardon the verbosity here folks.
