84 240DL - Ignition problem question 200 1984

Greetings folks,

I've got a 1984 240DL that seems to be having some ignition difficulties.

When driving, it'll miss (basically cut out, not have power at all) for a few cylinder fires, then come back.. runs great except when it misses. This happens every 5 to 10 min of driving... sometimes more, sometimes less.. pretty random.

When it misses, I notice the tach gets screwy.. you'd think it'd go down because the motor is loosing speed (you can feel the car pull back when it happens) but the tach usually goes UP when this problem happens... and gets jumpy.. then kicks back to the actual RPM when the missing stops.. it's never long, just a few cylinder fires...

given the misfire AND funky tach action, my thoughts point to the ignition system. I checked the wires, cap, rotor, little things like that.. all seem good and all of those components are well before thier replacement interval at this point...

My thought is it's probably the hall sensor in the distributer on the way out... think i'm right?? anything else that rings a bell?

Thanks!
-Nathan
