engine temp rises while climbing up mountain 200

Ok just like the subject says. its a 84 station wagon b23 automatic. it has a new water pump (4 months old) and no problems with temp at any other time.
Thinking it might be the trans heat exchanger but why would the tranny fluid be running hot? I am not towing/hauling anything but skis.
Thanks in advance. Joe
