544 light switch problems 444-544

I lost my dash lights on my 1961 544. After much time working with the various bulbs and connections under the dash, I tried another switch (used) and it was another problem. Dash lights came on with parking lights, but they go out when you pull the switch all the way out to headlight position. I tried another one (I had two used switches) and it was the same, but if I push it in just a little from the "full out" position, I can get the dash lights to come on again with the headlights. Is this a typical problem with 544 switches? and is there any way to repair it or get new switch? This is six volt car, so possibly an old US car switch would work, but are they available?
Thanks,
Harley Johansen
