Performance 'coffee can' muffler on a Volvo??? 700 1989

The mufflers, etc are going on my 89 740 sedan. I was thinking of adding one of those cool stainless steel "coffee can" mufflers with the big output hole in the rear. I have seen a "universal" fit one for sale. Has anyone done this? Would it be to seem "trying too hard to be cool"??
do they improve the performance of the car?
Thanks,
el Raidman
