'83 GL died, won't start. Predictions? 200 1983

Is my engine toast?
I had just pulled out of the driveway and was heading down the street when the car jumped a little and died. The first thing that came on was the oil light. Now the car won't start. When you turn the key, the dashboard lights come and something's happening under the hood, but there's no sound of the engine trying to turn over.

Possibly related: Ever since I've had the car it would (very rarely) lose power as I was driving, like a super-quick hiccup, then continue on. Replacing the engine wiring harness a few months ago didn't seem to eliminate the problem. When it died it seemed like a similar behavior, except it quit for good.

The car's been towed to the shop, but I'm hoping to get some idea of the damage before I hear back.

Thanks for any ideas.
