strange AM band response when installing new volvo radio - why 700

Help. I have a 1995- 945 volvo. The original radio died (the radio had an integeral amp). I replaced it with a TD-6141 (and separate amp) from a late 1980 740 series volvo. I rewired the harness and added the amp to radio cable. When I plugged in the 6141 unit, the FM worked fine. However, there was no sound (only hissing) from the AM (the stations would show up in the display. The same thing happened when I connected two other radios (another 6141 and a CR-718) to the 945. Here is the weird part. All three of the radios work fine in my daughters 740 (including the AM). Does anyone have any idea of what could be wrong? Then 945 has the in the window antenna. The AM on the original radio worked fine.

During the harness change, I did not hook up the dimmer, reostat, or antenna power wires (no power antenna).
