Replace transmission in 740 700 1989

(For history see posting on Jan 13 – need transmission overhaul? and responses)

My car had the transmission flush on Friday, cause of the problems I was having with the car in reverse. I saw the filter they took out of it, which had brown particles on it and the fluid on it was brown. (They had replaced the filter in mid-October and at that time the transmission was clogged with rust) The transmission people told me it was rust on the filter and also that there was still some water in the transmission. He said some pipes that you can see when the pan was dropped had some rust on them, so he questioned whether my transmission could even be overhauled, cause of possible rust inside. He also said that he thought I would have problems with my transmission again by 2 months and recommended that I install a used transmission. They also said that my radiator must be leaking since there was still water in the transmission.

I later went to see my mechanic who had put a new, Volvo radiator in the car in April 2000, only 16,000 miles ago. He said if my radiator leaked water into the transmission, then there should be signs of transmission fluid in the radiator reservoir. The reservoir has no sign of being pink. It’s kinda clear, greenish. He checked it and also said the hoses all looked good and if there had been transmission oil going through the radiator hoses, that they would look degraded. He said he didn’t do a transmission flush when he replaced the radiator because it had a leak only, it had not ruptured. He said at that time too, there was no sign of transmission fluid in the radiator.

So he doesn’t know how else water could be getting into my transmission. Also, he said Volvo wouldn’t honor any warranty over a year after purchase. So if I get a new radiator as this list suggested and the transmission guy, I would have to pay for it. And my mechanic is saying my radiator is fine.
I haven’t steam cleaned the engine or driven through any flooding, the transmission fluid stick was on tight.

So how could water be getting into my transmission?

Since it seems clear that I’ll need to put another transmission in my car within the next two months, I certainly don’t want to have a repeat performance of this trouble. Any ideas of how my transmission has water and rust?

I very much appreciate your knowledge and comments from this list. Thanks much.

Katalina
