70 145 axle halfshaft bearing 140-160

The 145 came home the other night with a horrible grinding sound coming from the right rear wheel. The initial thought was something had droped off from the parking brake system, but further investigation revealed that the only thing left from the outer halfshaft bearing were the races and not much of those remained either. The bearing that was used was a single row ball, all the books I have show two different tapered roller bearing versions and no mention of the ball bearing version at all? I am wondering what happened here and if I could use either roller bearing version or do I have to look for the ball bearing type. The halfshaft is damaged on the bearing surface and my thoughts were to look for another shaft assembly complete. Thanks
