Help. Which Wires to Test Transfer Pump? 200 1981

I'm trying to test the transfer fuel pump that's in the tank of my 1981 242. I'm in the trunk with the cover plate off and I'm looking at the top of the tank where the transfer pump wires come out, etc. I have not loosened anything. There are three wires coming off the top of the tank. One brown one goes from the round tank lid/door to ground in the trunk. The other two wires, a black one and a grey one, go together to a plug, then along the side of the car toward the front. I unplugged the plug. I want to apply 12v to the correct two wires to see if the transfer pump is working. Beginners question: Which two wires? I know there's also a sending unit down in there that works. I just want to test the pump and I don't want to hurt anything.
