using legacy test tachometer 200 1986

I have an OLD (70's) needle movement type tachometer (2 wire) that I used to use on my old 122 Volvo to read RPM's. Can this unit be used on a 240DL to read RPM's? I believe that last time I tried using it on my 240, I probably connected its negative lead to ground, and the positive lead to one of the coil's connections. I got no indication, so I was assuming the unit was dead. I'm getting the impression now looking at schematics, that I need to connect the positive lead to a +12v supply point (somewhere), and the negative lead to connector "1" on the coil. Can someone please clarify the correct connection points?
