Strange noise after starting? 200 1988

My girlfriends car, '88 244 157K, starts just fine, but immediately after starter engagment there is a noise like metal shaking really fast, almost like grinding but not that severe. It goes away in about 1-2 seconds. Is the starter running too long, or is this just a feature of cold weather? It has been near 0 farenheit for the past week.

Anybody have any idea what this could be or where I should check? It does idle at about 1500rpm on startup, which i need to reset this weekend (I cleaned the TB that's why), is this a factor?
