Roof rack and airdam 700 1988

Ok, I looked at the FAQ and found that roofrack removal & replacement, which is what I'd be facing to replace the worn / missing bushings and weather seal, is a royal PITA. For the time being, at least until the normal summer drought hits Memphis, I may just bung the holes up with silicone seal. I like the rack but if it comes off easily I'll plug the holes with IPD's grommets and buttons.

Now about the airdam. Besides needing paint it's not in bad shape. What I'd like to know is what are the sides of it supposed to be supported by. It's attached across the front with several bolts and "D" washers but it hangs down on either side. There is a lip on the side that probably slides into something and Haynes mentiones a side support as part of the bumper bellows. I don't see anything like that under the car. What am I missing?

Thanks,
