Car is an 89 245DL
This all started when I decided to change the air filter. I don't regret doing that because the old filter was dirty and was some cheap brand. Well, after doing some search on the air box thermo I kept hearing about, I got paranoid. I remembered that when I changed the filter yesterday and cleaned the inside of the air box, there was this flap that was open. I didn't think much about it until yesterday evening when I read the response to my posts about my fiasco with the DIY filter change and when I searched the FAQ about air filters/AMM and learned about the air box thermo. I couldn't sleep that night, so first thing I did this morning was to take apart my air box and test the thermo. Can you believe how easy it was the second time to separate the air box and removing the filter? I learned from yesterday. GRRRRRRR! It was just as easy putting everything back, too! Okay, now about the air box. I understand there are two openings. There is one on the side, which allows outside air in. And there is the bottom one with a flap, which is linked to the pre-heater hose. The flap again was open. The temperature this morning was about mid 60 or something. It was nice and sunny. I didn't feel cold at all. Is the flap supposed to stay open when the engine is cold and off? I read somewhere that the thermo is electronically monitored. So does that mean the thermo will be open when the engine is cold? Or does the thermo work by ambient temperature?
Based on the fact that the flap was open yesterday when I changed the filter and the fact that it was open again when I looked at it this morning, I thought maybe I have a defective thermo. The I read that a constant stream of hot air will damage the AMM. The weird thing is that if my thermo was open, then how come my AMM still works and the car drives great? Well, I didn't want to take any chances. I read that many have just plugged the pre-heater hole. I decided to just shut the flap closed by taping it down. Have I done the right thing? I live in California, so it rarely gets extremely cold.
Now my concern. If I plug the pre-heater hose via the air-box flap, will I cause any back pressure or some kind of build up in hot air? Where will all the hot air go now that the pre-heater hose is blocked at one end? I need to know if taping the air flap closed is an "OKAY" procedure so that I can sleep at night.
