Slowly varying fuel gauge 200 1992

My Brick must be dyslexic... temp needle is steady as a rock but the fuel guage has started to wander! Seems like when the tank is less than half full, the needle will slowly and irregularly move between just about the red zone to somewhere below the half-mark, which I take to be the true level. If this happened just while I'm driving the hills I would assume it's due to fuel slosh in the tank, but it happens while running on the flats as well. I'm not overly concerned for now, but I am wondering if this is an early symptom of sender demise. Ideas?
