MAF dying? 200 1982

Went to Radio Shack this morning and when I got there I had an idle surge, bad. I got out and unplugged the MAF and it went away which caused me to swear a lot. Went in, bought my stuff. Started in back up, surge was still there. I had two stops to make on the way home and by the first one, when I stopped, the surge was gone and life was good. No problems at all now. Is the MAF dying or just dirty or what? What and how do I clean it if that's a possibility. I really don't have money in the budget this month for a new one but if I need one then I need one. Thanks.
