940 and 740 problem; no car now 900

Very cold here in N.W. Ohio and started my 210,000 mile 86 740 a couple of days ago and ran very rough. Stalled and now turns over with short bursts of ignition, but no start. Ran fine day before; no warning. This car has newer distributor and fuel pump relay.

Now, today my 200,000 mile 91 940 (my last line transportation) wants to quit when giving it gas. In part can rev it up with no problem, just when in drive it acts up. This car has newer fuel pump relay, distributor, radio suppression relay, air filter and fuel pump regulator.

Does anyone have any suggestions. On the 740 I am going to check fuel and spark for starters (as well as plugs), but don't know where to begin on 940 problem.

Thanks for any immediate help. Need car for work.
