tailgate slam 200 1987

Does anyone else have issues with the eardrum blowing slam of an improperly closed tailgate on their wagon? If anyone who doesnt have volvo experience closes my tailgate they just swing it down and it slams with amazing intensity, it literally hurts my ears and I wait to find broken pieces the next time I open up my rear hatch. Does anyone have a solution? I have new struts but that doesnt help. Other manufacturers somehow set up the valving in the struts to eliminate the slam even when the gate is swung down carelessly. Any info would be appreciated.......Thanks,

A pain in the ear
