M40 in a '68 122. 120-130 1968

For some reason I am all of sudden unable to down shift into 2nd gear, unless I double clutch! Anyone with ideas on what would cause that? I don’t recall any grinding or clunking during recent driving, and I’m sure it was OK even one week ago. It’s like the syncro ? just wore out.
Next summer I will put in a M41 with OD and I have to now wonder what kind of shape that tranny, now sitting on the garage bench, is in. Is there a way to check an M40 or M41 when they are not installed?
