Reader, I pulled the engine... 444-544

Yup...that would be my guess too... I've got a M41 in my garage, that one of the detent thingie springs has visably broken. I was able to force the selector rod to 3rd, but now can't get it out.

Of course, your's could be a different issue...but I expect you'll see something wrong when you get the cover off... maybe.

Good luck... and...the stiff spot in the engine went away? When you separated the gearbox from teh trannsmission? Sorta makes it sound like something in the gearbox... which may well be the cause of both problems. Does teh gearbox itself turn easily in any gear?
