Intermittent (drastic) loss of power accompanied by some backfiring 200 1988

Thanks in advance for any help with this...My wife's '88 240 DL (255k+) will be running fine, then loses power intermittently, but doesn't totally shutdown or stall. It chuggs along at about 1 or 2 MPH, backfiring occasionally. The next time we use it, it may run fine. It acts really close to when the oxygen sensor went out about two years ago, so I've replaced that (again) and the fuel filter. We also have a relatively new fuel pump and fuel pump relay. (Though they have been on there for about 3-4 years.) It seems to happen more frequently when it's cold out, so we've run some good water remover through the gas tank. I had been putting injector cleaner through it on a pretty regular basis. I checked the mass air flow sensor, unplugging it while it was running. It showed a roughness in the idle when unplugged, so I figured that must be working. I cleaned the contacts on the mass air flow sensor, and put dielectric compund on the contacts, then took it for a spin, and it seems "fine." Of course, it does seem fine until the next time it pulls its stunt. I could deal with it somewhat better than my wife. Since it's her car, I'd really like to figure this out, so she doesn't get stuck on the side of the road...again.

Many thanks for any help you may be able to give.

Randy
