740 rear torque rod bushings. Replacement question

What is the correct orientation of the large torque rod bushings on the 740's? The bushings are sort-of oval shaped. I would think that the orientation should be horizontal, ie: in the direction of force. But, every 740 I see has them the other way, with the gaps facing back and forwards.
I'm trying to tackle some SERIOUS driveline slop, which I think is atributed to my subframe mounts, but I will change everything.
