removing in tank fuel pump without boot access 700 1988

My in tank pump has died, completely by the sound of it, and wondering if it's "easy enough" to remove it by dropping the whole tank down out of the car...? it's not possible to get access through the boot at all unfortunately... as it's permanently locked!! Short of getting someone to break the lock, it's shut, i'd prefer to leave it that way till i can afford it, however, is it hard to drop the tank out and get the pump assembly out?
Thanks
Aaron
