Valve ticking loud under load 700 1988

Well, i've isolated the noise my engine makes to the first 2 intake valves... i noticed it first after a long drive (3000ks), and it's been there ever since, doesn't *seem* to affect performance AFAIK, however, i looked through the oil cap and could see some markings on the "long" side of the intake valve cam part.... i.e. not at the rubbing points of the camshaft, in between that, there looks to be about 6 or 7 "marks" on the metal, it almost looks like there was a varnish on it, and someone has "chipped" the paint off, however, i used a small screwdriver (gently) and could feel any variation in the surface... Does anyone know what that might be? the oil looks real "dark" however, it's dark/golden on the dipstick, but in the engine under the shaft looks rather like it's got lots of black (very very very fine) particles or something in it... i don't know what's going on!
Can anyone help? :)
Aaron
