As John said, it sounds like you've got the ever famous slip-o-matic trans. I've also got an ES with the same thing. I'm constantly on the lookout for a cheap E model parts car in my area with a manual trans (few and far between).

The slipping trans (or clutch??) may be a big part of your fuel consumption problem. However, if you've got the auto, you will probably never see much better than about 18/24. With the standard, maybe something like 20/26.
