72 ES Rear hatch drains 1800

Thanks Board for all your help in the past! Noticed water accumulating in the lip under the seal of the rear hatch. Took off seal and cleaned up the gunk and finally found 2 small holes clogged with dirt. The area around the hole is actually higher than the surrounding area which doesn't allow the water to completely drain out. Any remedies out there? The trough is in great shape but rust is just aching to start due to the standing water. I reached for the drill but decided to ask for experienced wisdom! The car is totally original and I don't want to mess it up. Thanks. Jim
