gear shifter 900 1993

we had to take apart the gear shifter on my 940 turbo to check the od switch. We had a hard time getting it back on and now it shifts loudly and bulky. It feels as if it is breaking when you shift. The button is very hard to push also. Is there anyway to make it operate smoothly again? Do we just need to rplace the shifter?
