engine dies when headlights switched to hi-beam 700 1989

My 89 745 has a weird problem. When I switch my headlights to hi-beam, my engine dies. It just started today and my suspects are the headlamp relay and/or the bulb-failure relay.

Symptoms:
engine will die when hi-beams switched on
Does not happen with both right-side bulbs disconnected, tried new bulbs
on cold-damp mornings, occasionally my bulb failure light will come on even though all the lights work
I am using 55/100 H4 & 100w H1 bulbs...did I fry my relay and am just lucky to have made it home ? I almost never use the highbeams...I haven't upgraded the realy system...yet :)

Anyone have any sage advice on what to check first?

Thanks
