Window regulator on my 780, please help with general info. 700 1990

I think this glass repair shop wants to hose me.
It took me over 2 months to locate the left door window glass for my 780.
The motor worked just fine before the window broke.
2 days after installing it, it falls off the track when I tried to roll it down.
Now he says that I need a new regulator.
Is the regulator that "scissor" that holds the window while the motor rolls it up and down?
Can these be repaired? I've heard window plates can help adjust it.
And most important :
Can I interchange the motor with one from another vehicle?
I can't wait another two months to locate a regulator. it's too cold!!!
