Groan in cold weather reverse 900 1993

I just got a 1993 940 wagon. In cold damp weather when backing out of my driveway there is a loud groan from the rear sometimes it seems to come up the the driveshaft and be felt through the whole car. Any I deas... brakes, transmission, other???
Other interesting cold weather issue the shocks that hold the gate up- don't, when it is cold outside. Should these be replaced with a Volvo replacement or will any aftermarket shock work okay?

Thanks- Scott
