What's involved in pulling the carpet out? 700 1988

I discovered where my water leak was coming from. Looks like the 4x4 inch plug under the driver's left kick panel. No evidence of water any higher than that. Sealing the plug won't take much but I want to do things right so that means pulling the carpet and insulation completely out. I know I'll be pulling the seats and at least the rear of the center console. Does the front of the console have to come out also? (Might be the only was I can figure out how to get the fuse/relay panel out)

The plan is to pull the carpet, dry things out, deal with a little surface rust on the floor, install the front seats and drive w/o carpet until it has dried out completely.

Sound like a good plan?
