Alternator connector difficult to remove 200

I'm finding the alternator 90°connector on my 85 DL is difficult to remove by hand and I'm concerned about using pliers etc. to get it off without breaking it. Is it OK to use pliers or should I continue to twist back and forth and pull by hand. I know it's a trivial question but I figure it's better to ask those who have done it and know. Thanks in advance!
