1985 740 Turbo charging problem 700

Hi,

I am having a problem with the charging system. The volt meter reads normal (14.2)
then goes down into the red (10). I changed the battery and then the alternator and it still is charging better but not like before this problem. I found, while replacing the alternator a red wire that plugs into the alternator had the insulation crumble off and is basically bare up to the plastic conduit. What is this wire for, my guess is the alternator light. I taped up the wire as much as I could, the wire may be worse off into the conduit. Could this be the root of my problem. I figured it was time to change the battery (at least 5 years old) and the alternator (original). I read that if the bulb was out the system would not charge, so would this wire being stripped cause irratic charging problems? Thanks in advance.
