Multimeter 700 1985

Hi all. I have a novice DYIer question. I bought a multimeter to test the sensors and such in my 85 740 (namely the ECT). Now I followed the advice and instructions both from the FAQ and previous posts. When I try to get a reading for resistance I don't get a reading at all. I checked (many times) to make sure I had the correct setting on the MM, as well as trying others just in case. How can I check to see if the MM itself is working properly? As well it only came with the pointy piercing type test leads, is this my problem? Do I need to get the alligator clips? Please help. Thanx.
