Wiper switch 700 1990

On my 740 GLE I was frustrated by the function of the wiper switch. It seemed when I washed the windows I needed to turn the wipers on manually. The owners manual stated otherwise but all other functions were OK (2 speeds & intermittant). Since we are having a cold winter, lo & behold one morning while the temp was in single digits it functioned as it should. But only that one time! I have since taken out the switch and used a meter on it and it seems alright. Unfortunately the Chiltons book I have does not give the wiring diagram for that circuit. I feel there is a module in the dash or the switch is suppose to work in more than one position for this function. Any help anyone can supply would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
