Brass wire brush will work nicely, then a wipe with solvent- kerosene, WD40, a lot of things will work. Isopropyl alcohol should dissolve it as well. Don't forget an oil change when you're all done. Probably not a bad idea to lube the cylinder walls with motor oil again after you're done cleaning it up, so it doesn't start dry and score the cylinders. How do they look for cylinder wear and the ridge at the top? Look closely at #1 for cylinder wall damage- seems to be the first place for it.
