Model Designations: 700 Turbo Wagon 700

Hi,

I'm a new poster here - just bought a 1990 740 Turbo Wagon to supplement my more fun, but less practical BMW 330i. I love the Vovlo - great condition, one owner, full service records, and every thing works. It's got 114k miles.

Anyway, my question is: Can someone tell me how a 700 gets classified as a 740, 744 or 745? Is this based on body style, engine, transmission or what? I reviewed the FAQ, but don't see a reference to this.

Thanks in advance for your input - I'm sure I'll rely on the collective knowledge of this group a lot in the future!
