A/C Retro Fit 1988 240 DL 200

Just purchased a 88 240 for my daughter. The A/C works but there is a leak where the drier connects to the condenser. The A/C shop quoted me $615 to R&R the parts and charge the system with R-12...this stunned me. So I am considering buying the Volvo retrofit kit and changing over to R-134 my self. The kit has alot for the price,($200) a new evaporater core, expansion valve, drier, hoses and oil. I was wondering about using the existing compressor. I have seen in other posts that it is necessary to remove the existing compressor, and tipping it over to drain the oil out. I asked the A/C shop and they said this was true. They said there is no evac system with enough vacuum to remove the oil. I know zip about the construction of compressors, but isn't there a way to remove the hoses's and stick a tube into the compressor to suck out the oil? If possible I would like to avoid removing the compressor. Any ideas?
