Question Re: exhaust baffle rattle 900

I have been hearing a rattle upon acceleration for the last 2 weeks coming from my 94 940 NA with 94K. I finally got around to looking underneath while my kid revved the engine. Turns out to be a small metal baffle that sits about 10-12" in front of the cat. converter. It is loose and slides pretty easily back and forth about 2-3" in each direction. It does not appear to serve any function that I can tell except perhaps as protection for that portion of the pipe that leads to the cat. converter.
Any of you guys know what it is and if it's ok to remove it?

thanks
