Which ATF capacity is correct? 200 1986

After replacing my kickdown cable yesterday, I checked my owner's manual for the correct transmission fluid capacity (7.8 qts) and started filling. After about 6.5 quarts, the fluid overflowed and I started making an expensive puddle of Mobil 1 on the ground. I had my Haynes-her-way manual there, so I re-checked the proper capacity. It said 5.6 quarts. Which is correct? If 7.8 is correct, how do I fit it in? Do I have to turn the car on and put the transmission through some maneuvers or something? If 5.6 is correct, should I drain the excess out? Thanks in advance for the advice.
