Importance of loosening top stut nut? 200

OK this may be a stupid question but why is it essential to loosen the top strut nut before removing the strut assembly to change the strut inserts? The reason I ask is because the only thing keeping me from doing the job is finding (or making) a suitable tool to accomplish this. It seems like it would just be easier to break the nut free when the strut assembly is out of the strut tower but then again Volvo wouldn't have a made specific tool for no reason. So why is it that it must be loosened before removeing the whole assembly?

Thanks for your help.

Adam.
