Hot 960 900 1997

Hello all, I've got a High engine water temp problem with the 960 1997 model with 55,000 miles.The my temp gauge goes to red hot within 5 miles!! the top radiator hose is very hot the bottom hose is cold,this has been a progressive problem the car has ran very warm not hot till today.Any way I thought I would ask the experts,I think I have a bad (stuck thermostat) and plan to R&R it in the morning,any tips or concerns concerning the thermostat removal????? it looks very simple with easy access.thanks for any replies.
