Brake action, brake hoses, and ABS vs. non 200 1992

I've had a 1980 wagon for years. Among its many good qualities, I love the feel of the brakes. Then I added a 1992 wagon. It doesn't have the same brake action--it's softer, doesn't transmit the same assurance that by God this car is gonna stop no matter what.

I can think of two ways to account for the difference:

1. The 1992 has ABS.

2. About eight years ago, I installed the IPD braided steel brake hoses on the 1980.

Should I expect the two systems to have the same feel, or do the ABS systems all feel different? Or do the braided hoses have less give under pressure than the original rubber hoses, making for a more solid pedal response? (I don't recall noticing any difference when the braided hoses first went on).
