HACKING ECU

I want to hack my car's ECU, then check its fault codes
at present i dont have any "scanning software",
is it possible to check fault codes by connecting LED or TEST LAMP
to its terminal?, also i need to know how to reprogramm ecu
"PLEASE IF HAVE ANY DEPTH OF KNOWLEDGE REGARDING THIS ISSUE,PLEASE FEEL FREE
TO POST especially on how to reprogramm ecu manually, also tell me what software to use? please suggest me"
